Pacita Abad Filipino-American, 1946-2004

Pacita Abad was a Filipino-American visual artist whose vibrant and intricate textile art gained international recognition. Born in Bangued, Philippines, she studied painting at the University of the Philippines before moving to New York City in the 1970s.

Abad's work often incorporated elements of her Filipino heritage, including traditional textiles, embroidery, and symbols. Her most notable pieces were her "trapunto" works, large-scale textile pieces stitched with intricate patterns and imagery. These works often explored themes of identity, migration, and social justice, drawing inspiration from her own experiences as a Filipino immigrant.

Abad's art was characterized by its bold colors, intricate details, and social commentary. She often used her work to raise awareness about issues such as women's rights, environmental concerns, and the plight of indigenous peoples. Her art has been exhibited in museums worldwide such as MoMA PS1, and she is considered one of the most important Filipino artists of her generation.
