Stellan Mörner Swedish, 1896-1979
A founding member of the Halmstad Group and one of the earliest painters to explore Surrealism in Sweden, Mörner played a key role in introducing modernist ideas to Nordic visual culture. After studying in Paris, he developed a quiet, structured Surrealism marked by metaphysical space and psychological ambiguity. His work from the 1930s is among the clearest articulations of Surrealist painting in Scandinavia at the time. Mörner was central in forming a dialogue between French avant-garde movements and Swedish visual tradition, bridging Cubism, Symbolism, and Surrealist poetics. His artworks were included in the landmark 1936-1937 exhibition Surrealist, Dada and Fantastic art at the MoMA.
