Chico da Silva Brazilian, 1910-1985

“These worlds that I paint are not memories from the time I was a boy. This is called imagination, occult sciences, astronomy…”  - Chico da Silva
Chico (Francisco) da Silva was a Brazilian artist of indigenous descent, known for his vibrant, fantastical paintings that often featured mythical creatures, birds, and jungle scenes. Born in the state of Acre, Silva initially worked as a laborer and only began painting later in life. He used simple materials like cardboard and house paint, which eventually attracted attention from local artists and critics. His art drew heavily on the folklore and natural beauty of the Amazon region, blending vivid colors and expressive forms. Silva's unique, raw style became internationally recognized, and he is celebrated as a key figure in Brazilian naïve art.
